Boost controller for multi-string LED backlight
The ROHM BD6583MUV-AE2 is a DC DC controller IC designed to drive LED strings in backlight applications. It uses a step-up (boost) topology and requires external switching FETs — the controller itself does not integrate the power switch. Six regulated current sinks, each rated for 25 mA, support parallel LED strings from a single boost rail. The 1 MHz switching frequency allows the use of small inductors and ceramic capacitors, shrinking the overall solution footprint on the backlight PCB.
Dimming interface and supply range
Both analog and PWM dimming are supported, giving the system designer flexibility to trade off linear current control against wide dimming ratio. The PWM input modulates the LED current duty cycle; the analog input sets the current amplitude directly. The controller operates from a 2.7 V to 22 V supply rail, covering single-cell Li-ion through multi-cell battery stacks and regulated intermediate buses. The wide input range simplifies front-end design when the same PCB must support multiple end-product power sources.
Package, temperature, and compliance
Housed in a 24-lead VQFN020V4040 package with an exposed pad for thermal dissipation. The 4 mm × 4 mm footprint suits space-constrained portable and display applications. Surface-mount assembly follows standard QFN reflow profiles. Rated for operation from -30°C to +85°C ambient, covering consumer and industrial indoor environments. The device is ROHS3 compliant and carries an active lifecycle status from ROHM.
