LED driver controller for automotive lighting
The ROHM BD18342FV-ME2 is a DC DC Controller LED driver designed for automotive exterior and interior lighting modules. It provides a single PWM dimming output with a switching frequency range of 100 Hz to 5 kHz, matching the typical pulse-width modulation rates used in automotive taillight, daytime running light, and ambient lighting applications.
Supply range and external switching
The controller accepts a supply voltage from 4.5 V to 19 V, allowing it to operate directly from a nominal 12 V automotive battery rail without an additional pre-regulator. The 4.5 V minimum ensures start-up during cold-crank conditions where the battery dips below 6 V. No internal switch is integrated — the BD18342FV-ME2 drives an external MOSFET or transistor. This gives the designer control over the power-stage current rating and switching losses independent of the controller IC, which is useful for scaling the LED string current across different lamp wattages. The PWM dimming frequency range of 100 Hz to 5 kHz covers both low-frequency dimming (visible flicker near 100 Hz) and high-frequency dimming (above 1 kHz) where the switching is imperceptible to the human eye. The actual frequency is set by an external resistor and capacitor on the RT/CT pin.
The 0.65 mm pitch allows routing on a standard 2-layer automotive PCB without micro-vias, keeping the board cost low for high-volume lighting modules. The operating temperature range supports reflow soldering profiles typical of lead-free (ROHS3) assembly.
For new designs, the AEC-Q100 qualification and wide temperature range make it suitable for automotive lighting ECUs that require PPAP documentation.
