Product details

Three-phase DMOS driver for automotive BLDC motors

The ROHM BD16852EFV-CE2 is a fully integrated three-phase brushless DC motor driver combining control logic and DMOS power stages in a single 28-VSSOP exposed-pad package. It drives brushless DC motors using three half-bridge outputs, covering multiphase stepper motors as well, with a supply and load voltage range of 5.5V to 18V. The DMOS output stage delivers the drive current needed for 12V automotive BLDC motors without an external FET bank.

The 5.5V to 18V supply range covers the automotive 12V battery bus under normal operation, low-crank conditions down to around 6V, and load-dump transients up to 18V. The same voltage rating applies to the load, so the motor winding sees the full battery rail without a separate power stage. Designers should confirm the minimum operating voltage against their system's cold-crank profile — 5.5V leaves about 1V of headroom below a 6.5V trough, which is typical for most 12V automotive designs.

Package and thermal: 28-VSSOP exposed pad

Without a via-stitched copper pour under the pad, the DMOS junction temperature will exceed the 125°C limit under continuous motor load. The exposed pad also serves as the ground return for the power stage — keep the thermal vias short and wide to minimise inductance.
