When a transient drives the line above the 133 V minimum breakdown threshold, the Zener snaps into conduction and clamps the peak at no more than 193 V, protecting downstream components from overvoltage stress. For a motor drive or power-supply input bus, this handles the front-end IEC 61000-4-5 surge test class without cascading upstream.
