Isolation and switching for signal paths
The HCPL4503SVM is a single-channel optoisolator from onsemi, providing 5000Vrms galvanic isolation between a DC input and a transistor-with-base output. The 250ns typical turn-on and 260ns turn-off times suit isolated signal transmission up to several hundred kilohertz — common in IGBT gate drive interfaces, PLC digital inputs, and medical equipment where safety isolation is mandatory. The 8-SMD Gull Wing package reflows on standard surface-mount profiles and fits 8-SMD footprints across the HCPL4503 family.
CTR and drive current budget
Current transfer ratio spans 19% to 50% at 16 mA forward current. At minimum CTR, the output can sink 8 mA per channel — enough to drive a downstream logic gate or a low-power relay coil directly. The 1.45V typical forward voltage at 16 mA keeps the LED drive within a standard 3.3V or 5V logic rail's headroom. Maximum DC forward current is 25 mA, and the output transistor is rated to 20 V collector-emitter. These limits define the load-switching envelope: a 12 V relay coil at 8 mA is within spec; a 24 V industrial solenoid would need an external transistor.
