What this optocoupler does and where it fits
The 6N136TSVM is a single-channel optocoupler from onsemi that takes a DC input and drives a phototransistor with base access. Its 5000Vrms isolation rating makes it a natural fit for industrial motor drives, switch-mode power supply feedback loops, and any galvanically isolated digital signal path where the field wiring is noisy and ground potential differences are real. Switching is fast enough for most isolated gate-drive and logic-level translation tasks — typical turn-on time is 250ns, turn-off 260ns — but not targeted at high-frequency converters running above a few hundred kilohertz.
Parametric fit for your BOM
Output voltage is rated to 20V max, and the output can sink 8mA per channel — enough to drive a downstream logic gate or a small relay coil through a transistor buffer. Current transfer ratio spans 19% to 50% at a forward current of 16mA, so the input drive needs to be sized for the minimum CTR to guarantee the output switches across temperature. The forward voltage is a typical 1.45V. Operating temperature range of -40°C to 100°C covers industrial enclosures and outdoor telecom cabinets, but not extended automotive under-hood environments.
Sourcing and compliance status
The package is Bulk (tube) for the 8-SMD Gull Wing footprint.
Package and layout note
8-SMD Gull Wing package with a 0.50mm pin pitch — the same footprint as the DIP-8 surface-mount variant. The base pin on the transistor side is brought out, which lets you bias the phototransistor for faster turn-off or use it in a photodiode mode with an external amplifier.
