With 4170 Vrms isolation, the 4N25TVM provides galvanic separation between input and output — enough for mains-referenced control signals or industrial sensor interfaces where ground loops must be broken. The minimum current transfer ratio of 20% at 10 mA forward current means that with 10 mA through the LED, the output transistor can sink at least 2 mA. This is sufficient to drive a logic gate input or a small relay coil, but for higher loads you will need an external transistor or Darlington pair. Output Vce saturation is 500 mV max — low enough to pull a 5 V logic line to a solid low state without extra level shifting. Typical turn-on and turn-off times of 2 µs each make this optocoupler suitable for switching frequencies up to about 100 kHz, covering most digital isolation and PWM signal applications.
The 6-DIP (0.400-inch row spacing) through-hole package is breadboard-friendly and easy to hand-solder — a good fit for prototyping or low-volume production. The base pin (pin 6) is brought out, allowing external bias or feedback for linear operation if needed.
