Capacitive proximity sensor for level and presence detection
The Omron E2K-F10MC1-A 2M is a capacitive proximity sensor from the E2K series, designed to detect both metallic and non-metallic objects through a sensing distance of 4-10 mm. It outputs an NPN-NO 3-wire signal at 10 VDC supply, making it a direct fit for PLC digital input cards expecting a sinking signal. The unshielded construction allows through-wall or flush-mount installation, and the IP64 rating keeps dust and splash ingress out of the plastic enclosure during normal factory-floor operation. The LED indicator gives a quick visual on target presence during commissioning or fault-finding.
NPN-NO output and wiring considerations
The NPN-NO (normally open) output sinks current when a target is detected. At 10 VDC supply, the load connects between the output and the positive supply rail. This is the standard sinking configuration for many Asian-origin PLCs and controllers. The 3-wire cable leads — brown (V+), blue (V-), black (output) — follow the IEC color code; verify polarity before powering. The switching frequency of 100 Hz is adequate for part-present detection on conveyor lines running at moderate speeds, but not for high-speed counting applications.
Temperature grade and installation environment
Rated for -25°C to 70°C operating ambient, this sensor covers most indoor industrial cabinets, unheated warehouses, and outdoor enclosures in temperate climates. It is not rated for freezer environments or direct outdoor exposure in extreme cold. The plastic enclosure and IP64 seal mean it can handle dust and incidental splash, but not hose-down washdown or submerged conditions. For wet environments, consider the IP66-rated peer E2K-F10MC1.
