If your design needs more than 79 user I/O, step up to the EP4CE40F29C8 with 532 I/O, but that comes in a 484-pin BGA. For a design that fits in 79 I/O, the 144-EQFP is a simpler, cheaper board assembly than a fine-pitch BGA.
