Photovoltaic output driver for floating gate drive
The PVI5050NSPBF is a single-channel photovoltaic output optocoupler from the PVI series, designed to provide isolated gate drive for power MOSFETs and IGBTs in applications where a separate bias supply is impractical. Its photovoltaic output generates a floating voltage of up to 5V from the LED input, eliminating the need for a dedicated gate-drive rail.
5 µA output — what it means for gate drive
The 5 µA per-channel output current is characteristic of photovoltaic isolators: the output behaves as a current source, not a voltage source. This suits driving the gate of a small- to medium-power MOSFET (e.g., gate charge under 100 nC) where the turn-on time is dominated by the gate capacitance charging through this low current. The typical 300 µs turn-on and 220 µs turn-off times reflect this — expect tens to hundreds of microseconds for switching, not microseconds. That makes the PVI5050NSPBF a fit for relay-coil drive, soft-start circuits, or AC mains switching at line frequency, not for PWM above a few hundred hertz.
Housed in an 8-SMD gull-wing package with 4 leads, the PVI5050NSPBF is surface-mount and rated for standard reflow profiles. The supplier device package is 8-SMD. No special thermal management is needed at the 5 µA output level, but the gull-wing leads provide visual solder-joint inspection access.
For volume BOMs, the Active status allows qualification without a short-window supply constraint.
