The 5-0SMDJ36A clamps a 36 V nominal standoff rail — above that it breaks down and shunts the transient current away from the load. The 40 V minimum breakdown and 58.1 V clamping ceiling at 86.1 A peak pulse (10/1000 µs) tell you exactly what the downstream circuitry sees when the event hits, which is the whole point of sizing a TVS.
