What this optocoupler does on your board

The Toshiba TLP183(GRH-TPL,E is a single-channel phototransistor optocoupler with a DC input and a 3750Vrms isolation barrier. It provides galvanic isolation between a low-voltage control side and a higher-voltage output side, with the transistor output rated for up to 80V and 50mA continuous current. The current transfer ratio (CTR) is specified at 150% minimum and 300% maximum when the input LED is driven at 5mA. This 2:1 spread gives the designer a predictable window for sizing the input resistor so the output transistor saturates reliably across temperature and unit-to-unit variation.

The wide range also covers engine-bay and industrial motor-drive environments where heat buildup is a given.
