12-bit sigma-delta ADC with integrated signal chain
The TLA2024IRUGR is a 12-bit sigma-delta ADC from Texas Instruments that integrates a 4-input multiplexer, programmable gain amplifier (PGA), and internal reference in a single 10-X2QFN package. It samples at 3.3 kSPS — a rate well matched to low-bandwidth sensor channels like temperature, pressure, or strain gauges where the sigma-delta architecture delivers good noise rejection without an external anti-aliasing filter.
Package and rework considerations
The 10-X2QFN (2x1.5 mm) package is small but reworkable with care — the exposed thermal pad under the centre of the part helps conduct heat into the board during soldering. Under hot air, the part lifts cleanly if the board is preheated to 100-120°C; the key is getting the pad fully wetted before removal so the solder doesn't stick to the die attach. Pin 1 is marked by a chamfer on the top-left corner of the package — confirm orientation under magnification before reflow, because the 0.5 mm pitch leaves little room for a misalignment correction.
Supply and interface flexibility
A single 2V to 5.5V supply powers both the analog and digital sections, so you don't need separate rails for the ADC core and the I2C bus. The I2C interface supports standard and fast-mode speeds; the selectable address feature (one of the PGA/address pins) lets you put up to four of these on the same bus without an external address translator.
Input configuration and gain scaling
The four inputs can be configured as differential pairs or single-ended channels via the internal mux. The PGA offers gains up to 16x, which means a ±256 mV full-scale range is possible — useful for reading small sensor outputs directly without a front-end amplifier.
The sigma-delta architecture's inherent noise shaping helps maintain 12-bit resolution across the temperature range, though the offset drift of the internal reference should be budgeted for precision measurements near the extremes.
