Open-drain hex inverter with wide supply tolerance
The SN74LV05AD is a Texas Instruments 74LV-series hex inverter with open-drain outputs — six independent NOT gates, each inverting a single input to a low-side open-drain pull-down. The open-drain stage means the output sinks current to ground when active but floats high when inactive, so an external pull-up resistor sets the high-level voltage independent of the device supply. This makes it the natural choice for level translation, wired-OR busses, and driving loads at a different voltage than the logic core. Propagation delay is 7.5 ns max at 5 V into 50 pF — fast enough for most control and status signals below 50 MHz. The output low-level sink is 12 mA per channel, sufficient to drive a standard LED, optocoupler LED, or a small relay coil through a pull-up.

Quiescent current is 20 µA max across the supply range, so the part adds negligible draw in battery-backed or always-on sections. Input logic thresholds are 0.5 V low and 1.5 V high at 5 V supply — compatible with 3.3 V CMOS outputs driving into a 5 V powered device.
