Open-drain outputs — why they matter on this hex inverter
The SN74HC05D packs six inverter gates, each with an open-drain output. Unlike a standard push-pull output, an open-drain stage can only pull the output low (sink current) — the high level is set by an external pull-up resistor tied to whatever voltage the downstream logic needs. This is the standard method for level-shifting a 5 V logic output down to 3.3 V or up to 12 V, or for building a wired-OR bus where multiple outputs share a common pull-up.
Supply range and speed — where the 74HC family lands
Runs from 2 V to 6 V supply, drawing just 2 µA quiescent. The 20 ns propagation delay at 6 V with a 50 pF load is typical for the 74HC family — fast enough for most control and interface logic below 20 MHz, but not for high-speed clock distribution.

14-SOIC with a 3.90 mm body width — the narrow SOIC footprint that matches the industry-standard JEDEC MS-012 variation. The tube delivery means the parts come in anti-static tubes, not tape-and-reel; if your pick-and-place line is set up for tape, factor in a tube-to-tape conversion step or order the tape-and-reel variant (SN74HC05DR). The 1.75 mm seated height keeps it under most enclosure and mezzanine clearance limits.
