8-bit shift register in a 16-pin DIP
The SN74AHC595N is an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register from the 74AHC logic family, housed in a through-hole 16-DIP (0.300") package. It accepts serial data on one pin and outputs it on eight parallel tri-state outputs, with a serial output for daisy-chaining additional registers. Supply voltage spans 2V to 5.5V, making it usable in 3.3V and 5V systems without a separate level translator on the data lines.
The 16-DIP package (7.62 mm body width) is breadboard-friendly and stays solderable in wave or hand-assembly lines. No fine-pitch reflow needed.
The 74AHC family is mature but widely second-sourced; any pin-compatible 74AHC595 in DIP-16 from a different brand would require verifying the timing and output drive specs against this part's datasheet.
