14-pin DIP hex inverter with open-drain outputs
The Texas Instruments SN74AHC05N is a hex inverter with open-drain outputs — six independent inverter gates, each with a single input, packaged in a 14-lead plastic DIP (0.300" row spacing) for through-hole mounting. The open-drain output stage means each gate can sink up to 8 mA but cannot source current; the output goes low when the input is high and floats (high-impedance) when the input is low. This makes the part a natural fit for wired-OR buses, level translation where the pull-up voltage differs from VCC, and driving loads that need an external pull-up (relay coils, indicator LEDs, or a shared interrupt line).
Supply range and timing budget
Propagation delay is 7.5 ns maximum at 5 V with a 50 pF load — fast enough for most microcontroller I/O expansion and glue-logic interfaces without creating hold-time violations. Quiescent current is a maximum of 2 µA, so the part adds negligible static draw in battery-powered or always-on subsystems.
Temperature grade and typical applications
The through-hole DIP package is also common in lab prototypes, breadboard builds, and field repairs of legacy equipment where a surface-mount part would be impractical to hand-rework.
