256 x 9 Asynchronous FIFO in a DIP-28
The SN74ACT7200L25NP is a Texas Instruments asynchronous FIFO with a 256 x 9 memory array, giving 2.25 Kbit of buffer depth. The 25 ns access time and 28.5 MHz data rate set the throughput ceiling for the read/write cycle — the bus master must allow at least one access-time window between consecutive reads, or the output data is not valid on the second edge.
Package, mounting, and expansion
Housed in a 28-pin DIP (0.300" body width, 7.62 mm row spacing), the SN74ACT7200L25NP is a through-hole part suited for prototyping, low-volume production, or boards that avoid fine-pitch SMT. The 28-DIP footprint is standard — 0.100" pin pitch, 0.015" to 0.022" pin diameter — and mates with a standard socket or solders directly into plated through-holes. The FIFO supports depth and width expansion, meaning multiple devices can cascade to build larger buffers without external logic for the basic daisy-chain. Retransmit capability allows the FIFO to re-output data from a previous read pointer without reloading — useful in retry-on-error protocols.
