The SN74AC244DWR is a Texas Instruments 74AC-series octal buffer with non-inverting outputs and 3-state control. Each of the two 4-bit elements can sink or source 24mA per channel, enough to drive a short ribbon cable or a bank of LED indicators without an extra line driver.
24mA drive and 3-state outputs
The 24mA output current (both high and low) is the spec that decides whether this buffer can replace a dedicated bus transceiver in a low-to-moderate fan-out situation. At 5V supply the AC family's propagation delay is typically under 8 ns, so it keeps up with most parallel memory or peripheral interfaces. The 3-state outputs let multiple buffers share a data bus without contention — the output-enable lines (active-low per element) tristate the outputs when pulled high.
The 74AC family's CMOS construction keeps quiescent supply current in the microamp range, so it does not add a thermal burden in a sealed box.
20-SOIC wide-body — footprint and assembly
The 20-SOIC package with 7.50 mm body width (0.295") is the wide version of the SOIC-20 footprint, common on industrial and telecom PCBs. The wide body gives better clearance for manual probing during prototype bring-up compared to the narrow SOIC variant.
