The Texas Instruments MAX3232ECD is a full-duplex RS-232 transceiver with two drivers and two receivers, designed to operate from a single 3V to 5.5V supply. The 300 mV of receiver hysteresis provides clean switching on noisy lines without external filtering. This part is packaged in a 16-SOIC (3.90 mm width) for surface-mount assembly.
The wide supply range is the defining feature of the MAX3232 family. It allows the transceiver to run from a 3.3V rail (common in modern MCU-based designs) or a 5V rail (legacy industrial logic) without a separate level translator. The charge-pump circuitry generates the RS-232 bipolar voltages internally — ±5.5V typical — from the single supply.
If the design requires extended temperature, look at the industrial-grade MAX3232 variants (e.g., MAX3232EIPWR) that cover -40°C to +85°C.
