Current sense amplifier with wide supply range
The Texas Instruments LMP8480MME-T/NOPB is a single-circuit current sense amplifier in an 8-VSSOP package. It monitors current by amplifying the voltage drop across a shunt resistor, converting it to a ground-referenced output. The supply span from 4.5 V to 76 V covers common industrial and automotive rails — 12 V, 24 V, 48 V, and even a 72 V nominal battery bus — without needing an external regulator.
Bandwidth and slew rate for shunt monitoring
The 270 kHz -3 dB bandwidth and 1 V/µs slew rate mean the amplifier can track current transients in switch-mode power supplies and motor drive phases up to several tens of kHz, settling within a microsecond or two. Input offset voltage is 80 µV typical — for a 10 mΩ shunt carrying 1 A, that offset introduces a 0.8 % error at the output, which is acceptable for overcurrent detection but worth derating for precision metrology. Input bias current of 6.3 µA flows through the shunt and can add a small voltage drop; in a 1 mΩ shunt that is 6.3 µV, negligible alongside the offset.
Low quiescent current and temperature range
Quiescent supply current is 88 µA — low enough to keep the part powered continuously in battery-monitoring circuits without draining the pack.
Package and rework profile
The exposed pad is on the bottom — it needs a thermal via or a small solder fillet under the die attach pad for good thermal transfer to the board. Will it survive the hot air? Yes — the MSOP-8 body is small and the lead pitch is wide enough that a hot-air rework station can lift it cleanly without lifting adjacent pads. Pin 1 is marked by a chamfer on the top-left corner; the orientation is unambiguous under a microscope.
