Open-drain output and supply flexibility
The open-drain output (listed as CMOS, MOS, Open-Drain, TTL) means the output transistor pulls low to ground and floats high — you add a pull-up resistor to the logic rail of your choice. This is the same architecture as the classic LM393 family, so existing board layouts using that pinout will map directly. The 2V to 36V supply range is wide enough to handle a 12V automotive battery during cold-crank dips or load-dump spikes, as long as the absolute maximum is respected (the datasheet's absolute-maximum table is the final authority here). Input bias current is 0.25µA max at 5V, which keeps the voltage drop across high-value source resistors small — useful when the sense resistor is in the megaohm range for a low-power threshold.
