High-voltage adjustable LDO in a hermetic can
The Texas Instruments LM117HVH/NOPB is an adjustable positive linear regulator delivering up to 1.5 A from a 60 V maximum input rail, with an output adjustable from 1.25 V to 57 V.
The 1.5 A output current is continuous, not a peak — the TO-3 can with its large copper tab sinks the heat into the chassis or heatsink. Derate for ambient temperature and input-to-output differential: at 60 V in and 5 V out, the dropout is about 2 V, so the pass element dissipates roughly (Vin - Vout) × Iout = 55 V × 1.5 A = 82.5 W — that requires serious thermal management, not just a clip-on heatsink. PSRR is 80 dB at 120 Hz, dropping to 65 dB at the same frequency — this means the regulator attenuates 120 Hz ripple from a rectified mains input by a factor of 10,000 at the low end, preserving clean DC for sensitive analog loads like ADC references or sensor front-ends. Built-in over-current, over-temperature, and short-circuit protection mean the regulator survives a dead short on the output or a thermal runaway condition without external crowbar circuitry — it folds back current and shuts down until the junction cools.
