Ultra-low-power omnipolar switch for battery-operated systems
The Texas Instruments DRV5032AJDMRT is an omnipolar Hall effect switch that responds to both north and south magnetic poles — no need to align the magnet orientation on the assembly line. The Sleep Mode feature cycles the sensor between an active measurement window and a low-power idle, keeping average current consumption well below the 3.5 µA ceiling in typical duty-cycled operation.
Magnetic thresholds and output behaviour
The device trips at ±9.5 mT and releases at ±3 mT, providing 6.5 mT of hysteresis to prevent chatter from mechanical vibration or magnetic field ripple. The open-drain output sinks up to 5 mA — sufficient to drive a microcontroller GPIO or a small indicator LED directly, but a pull-up resistor to the supply rail is required on the output line.
Housed in a 4-XFDFN exposed-pad package with a supplier device package footprint of 4-X2SON measuring 1.1 mm × 1.4 mm, this part fits into space-constrained designs — think earbud charging cases, smart stylus tips, or portable medical test strips. The exposed pad on the underside must be soldered to a PCB thermal land and connected to the ground plane for both heat sinking and mechanical stability — page 10 of the datasheet shows the recommended stencil aperture pattern. Surface-mount assembly with Tape & Reel packaging supports standard pick-and-place throughput; the 1.1 mm × 1.4 mm body requires careful solder-paste volume control to avoid tombstoning.
