Its 3V to 18V supply range is the defining feature — it lets you run the same logic rail as a 5V microcontroller, a 12V industrial sensor bus, or a 9V battery without a secondary regulator. The 16 MHz clock ceiling and 100 ns propagation delay (at 15V, 50 pF) are adequate for slow-to-moderate-speed control and status-latching tasks where 74LS or 74F parts would need a tighter 5V supply.
