Product details

Hex inverter for wide-voltage, harsh-environment logic

The Texas Instruments CD4009UBE is a 4000B-series CMOS hex inverter with six independent inverter gates, each with a single input. It operates from a 3V to 18V supply, making it a direct fit for 5V, 12V, and 15V logic rails without external level translation. The through-hole 16-DIP package suits prototyping, repair, and legacy designs that avoid surface-mount assembly. Quiescent current maxes at 4 µA, so it adds negligible load to a power rail in always-on or battery-backed sections.

Maximum propagation delay is 60 ns at 15V with a 50 pF load. That is slow by modern 74AC or 74HC standards, but entirely adequate for level-shifting, clock division below a few MHz, and control logic where timing margins are generous. At 5V the delay will be longer — budget 100–120 ns for worst-case timing closure if running from a 5V rail. The output can source 1.5 mA and sink 24 mA per pin. The sink current is strong enough to drive a standard LED or a low-current relay coil through a resistor; the source current is limited, so pulling up a bus line requires an external pull-up resistor for most loads.

Through-hole 16-DIP: board fit and handling

Package is 16-DIP (0.300", 7.62mm) with a 16-PDIP supplier device package. The through-hole mounting is compatible with breadboards, prototype PCBs, and legacy boards that use DIP sockets. No special reflow profile is needed — hand-solder or wave-solder with standard leaded or lead-free process.

There is no official successor because it remains in the TI catalog.

Frequently asked questions

What is the equivalent of CD4009UBE?

The CD4009UBE is a 4000B-series hex inverter. A functional equivalent is the CD4069UB (hex inverter, same 4000B family, same DIP footprint), though the CD4009 has higher drive on the low side (24 mA sink vs 3.4 mA for CD4069). For surface-mount designs, the CD4009UBM (SOIC-16) is the same die in a different package.
