Zigbee SoC with integrated MCU and RF transceiver
The Texas Instruments CC2530F128RHAT is a system-on-chip for Zigbee applications, combining a 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.15.4 compliant RF transceiver with an MCU core. The receiver sensitivity of -97 dBm and output power of 4.5 dBm give it a solid link budget for indoor mesh networks spanning multiple rooms or floors. With 21 GPIOs and serial interfaces including SPI and USART, it can handle local sensor readout, actuator control, and host communication without an external microcontroller.
Current consumption and power budgeting
Receive current draws between 20.5 mA and 24.3 mA; transmit current runs 28.7 mA to 33.5 mA at 4.5 dBm output. For battery-powered end devices, the MCU can enter sleep modes between polling intervals, but the radio current dominates during active windows. A coin-cell design needs careful duty-cycle budgeting — the 250 kbps data rate means short on-air times for small payloads, which helps keep average current low.
For production BOMs, this means no forced redesign cycle from obsolescence.
