Over-voltage watchdog for 2-3 cell Li-ion packs
The Texas Instruments BQ294592DRVT is a dedicated battery protection IC designed to guard 2-3 series lithium-ion cells against over-voltage faults. It monitors each cell in the stack and triggers an external discharge FET when any cell exceeds the over-voltage threshold, preventing the pack from charging into an unsafe state.
Cell count and protection scope
This device handles 2 to 3 cells in series — a common range for 7.2 V to 11.1 V nominal Li-ion packs. The fault protection is limited to over-voltage only; there is no on-chip over-current or short-circuit detection, so the system designer must add those functions externally if the application requires them. The single-function focus keeps the die small and the BOM cost low for designs where over-voltage is the primary safety concern.
