The Texas Instruments BQ24179YBGR is an integrated NVDC (narrow-voltage DC) battery charger for 1- to 4-cell Lithium Ion/Polymer packs, delivering up to 5 A charge current from a supply rail that can go as high as 24 V. It is a digitally controlled part — the charge current, voltage, and termination are set over I²C, not by resistor dividers. That makes it a fit for designs where the charge profile needs to change across SKUs or where the MCU already has an I²C bus free. The fault protection block — over-current, over-temperature, over-voltage, short-circuit — is on-die, so you can skip an external supervisor IC in most designs.
5 A charge current and cell-count flexibility
The 5 A maximum charge current is the headline number for sizing the power stage. The 24 V maximum supply voltage gives headroom for USB-C PD inputs or a multi-cell input rail without an external pre-regulator.
