Single-cell Li-Ion charger with USB input and fault protection
The IC integrates a full set of fault protections — over-temperature, over-voltage, reverse-current, and short-circuit — so a single chip handles the failure modes that can cook a Li-Ion cell or backfeed the USB bus. That protection set is what keeps the board from coming back with a scorch mark around the battery connector. Programmable charge current and timer via external resistors let you tune the charge profile to the cell capacity without swapping the IC. The 3x3 mm 16-VQFN package with exposed pad keeps the footprint small, but the thermal pad needs a solid via array to the ground plane if you plan to run near the 1.5A limit for extended periods.
That wide range matters if the device lives in a dashboard, an outdoor IoT node, or a piece of factory automation equipment that sees temperature swings.
