Three fault protections are built in: over-temperature, over-voltage, and short-circuit. Over-voltage protection clamps the battery voltage at 4.2 V (the pack voltage spec), so the design does not need an external over-voltage cutoff comparator. Over-temperature shutdown protects the die during extended high-current charging in a warm enclosure — relevant when the charger shares a tight compartment with a radio or processor. Short-circuit protection on the output saves the battery and the charger if the output is accidentally bridged. These integrated protections reduce external component count and simplify the safety certification review for the end product.
