24 V fixed rail, 1 A capacity — what this regulator is for
The BA7824FP-E2: The BA7824FP-: The ROHM BA7824FP- is a single-output positive fixed linear regulator delivering 24 V at up to 1 A. It targets applications that need a clean, regulated 24 V bus from a higher unregulated DC source — think industrial sensor supplies, relay coil drivers, or auxiliary rails in motor drives. The 58 dB PSRR at 120 Hz tells you it handles full-wave rectified ripple well, so it can sit downstream of a bulk capacitor without needing an extra LC filter stage.
Dropout and headroom — the 2 V floor at full load
The dropout voltage is specified at 2 V typical at 1 A output. That means the input must stay at least 2 V above 24 V — so 26 V minimum — to keep the output in regulation when sourcing the full rated current. With a 33 V absolute maximum input, the usable input range is roughly 26 V to 33 V. If your rail dips below 26 V under load, the output follows it down. For margin, design for a 28 V to 30 V nominal input if the supply has ripple or sag.
Package and thermal path — TO-252-3 (DPak)
The BA7824FP- comes in a TO-252-3 (DPak) surface-mount package with an exposed tab. At 1 A and a typical dropout of 2 V, the device dissipates about 2 W. Without that thermal management, the over-temperature protection will cycle the output.
Protection features — over-current and thermal shutdown
On-chip over-current and over-temperature protection are included. The over-current limit engages before the output current exceeds the 1 A rating by a dangerous margin, and the thermal shutdown trips when the die temperature exceeds the safe operating range. These are standard for this class of regulator — they protect the device during a fault, not the load. The 8 mA quiescent current is typical for a 1 A linear regulator; the 800 µA supply current figure is the maximum drawn by the internal bias circuits.
