Active RL78/L13 with on-chip segment LCD drive

The R5F10WMEAFB#10 is an active-production 16-bit MCU from Renesas' RL78/L13 series, built around the RL78 core running at 24 MHz. It packs 64 KB of program Flash, 4 KB of RAM, and a separate 4 KB data EEPROM array — enough for a firmware image plus non-volatile calibration or configuration storage without an external serial EEPROM. The headline feature is the integrated segment LCD controller, which drives up to 40 segments × 4 commons directly from the MCU. This eliminates the cost and board space of a separate LCD driver chip for low-pin-count alphanumeric displays in metering, appliance, or medical-device front panels.

Peripheral set and I/O budget for display-centric designs

This is enough to drive a segment LCD, read a 4×4 keypad matrix, and still leave a dozen pins free for sensor inputs and actuator control. On-chip analog conversion comes from a 12-channel successive-approximation ADC with 8- or 10-bit resolution — selectable per conversion to trade speed against precision. The DMA controller can move conversion results directly to RAM without CPU intervention. Serial interfaces include CSI (clocked synchronous), I²C (multi-master capable), LINbus (for automotive sub-bus nodes), and standard UART/USART. This covers the common sensor and display protocols found in white-goods and industrial control panels.
