400 V, 12 A NPN power transistor for offline converters
The PHE13009/DG,127 from Nexperia is an NPN power bipolar junction transistor rated for 400 V collector-emitter breakdown and 12 A continuous collector current, housed in a TO-220-3 through-hole package. It is designed for the primary-side switch in flyback converters, PFC stages, and other off-line switched-mode power supplies where a rugged, cost-effective bipolar device is preferred over a MOSFET. The 80 W maximum power dissipation sets the heatsink sizing for a typical 100–150 W converter stage.
Vce(sat) is specified at 2 V maximum with 1.6 A base current driving 8 A collector current.
Active lifecycle — no EOL watch needed
The TO-220-3 (supplier package TO-220AB) is a standard through-hole power package. The metal tab is the collector. For 80 W dissipation, a substantial heatsink is required — the tab-to-ambient thermal resistance of a TO-220 in still air is around 60–70 °C/W, so forced air or a large finned heatsink is assumed. The 100 µA maximum collector cutoff current at 150 °C junction gives a sanity check on leakage at high temperature.
