What the 100 MHz 56800EX core means for your control loop
The NXP MC56F82746VLF is a 32-bit single-core MCU built around the 56800EX core, clocked at 100 MHz. That core is a digital signal controller — it blends MCU control logic with DSP arithmetic for single-cycle multiply-accumulate. For a motor-field-oriented control loop or a power-converter switching cycle, the 100 MHz clock gives you roughly 50 ns per instruction cycle, enough to run a 16 kHz current loop with headroom for comms stack overhead. The 64 KB Flash (32K x 16) stores the firmware; the 4K x 16 RAM holds the real-time data buffers and lookup tables.
Peripheral set and connectivity for distributed control
On-chip peripherals include DMA, POR, PWM, and WDT. The PWM block is key for three-phase motor drive or synchronous rectifier gate signals. Connectivity covers CANbus, I²C, SCI (UART), and SPI — enough for a CANopen fieldbus node or a sensor hub talking to a host controller. 39 general-purpose I/O are available on the 48-LQFP package.
It routes comfortably on a two-layer board if you keep the supply decoupling tight — one 100 nF per VDD pair near the pins.
