What the 1500 W peak pulse rating means for your rail
The 1.5SMC180CA: That 1500 W figure is the product of the clamping voltage at the rated current — 246 V at 6.2 A — so the part absorbs a 1500 W surge without exceeding its junction temperature limit. The reverse standoff voltage of 154 V means the diode draws negligible leakage current below that DC rail level; the breakdown voltage range starts at 171 V minimum. For a 150 V DC bus or a 120 V AC line after rectification, this part clamps transients before they reach the downstream silicon.
Package, mounting, and temperature range
Housed in a DO-214AB (SMC) surface-mount package, also referenced as SMCJ. The bidirectional configuration means a single device protects both polarities — useful for AC signal lines or DC rails where the polarity could reverse during a fault.
The 1.5SMC series includes multiple voltage variants, but the 180CA is the 154 V bidirectional option.
