Its 7.5 ns propagation delay (tpd) means it can handle address decoding or glue logic at clock rates up to about 100 MHz in a 5V system — fast enough for most 8-bit and 16-bit bus interfaces from the era it was designed for. The internal supply range is 4.75V to 5.25V, so it sits comfortably on a regulated 5V rail with typical ±5% tolerance. The commercial temperature grade (0°C to 75°C) limits it to indoor, non-condensing environments — no engine bay or outdoor cabinet without climate control.
Obsolete — what that means for your repair bench
Lattice Semiconductor lists the GAL16V8D-7LPN as Obsolete. For a board-level repair tech, this means the scorch mark tells you which part actually died, but getting a real replacement means sourcing through independent surplus channels — not the factory. The 20-pin DIP footprint is standard, so a pin-compatible GAL16V8 from another manufacturer or a later Lattice variant (like the ispGAL16V8) may fit the same socket, but the JEDEC fuse map and programming algorithm must match the original design.
Sourcing through independent channels
For a storeroom keeper or MRO buyer, this is a last-time-buy part: once the surplus channel dries up, the only path is a board spin with a newer 3.3V CPLD and level translators.
