1.5 F, 5 V — energy buffer for hold-up and backup
The SCMR22C155PRBA0 is a 1.5 F supercapacitor from the KYOCERA AVX SCM series, rated at 5 V with a maximum ESR of 190 mOhm at 1 kHz. That combination — 1.5 F at 5 V — stores about 18.75 J of energy, enough to ride through a brief mains dropout or supply peak current to a write cycle in a meter or drive. ESR and temperature — what drives the usable life
The 190 mOhm ESR at 1 kHz sets the charge/discharge efficiency and the internal heating during ripple current. In a 5 V rail, a 1 A pulse sees a 190 mV drop inside the cell — that loss heats the can and shortens the 1000-hour lifetime at 65 °C. Derate for lower ambient: at 45 °C the expected life roughly doubles per 10 °C drop below the rated temperature.
