5.4 V rated — why it simplifies the BOM
The SCMR18D105PRBB0 carries a 5.4 V rated voltage, which is double the typical 2.7 V single-cell supercapacitor. That means one part replaces two series cells plus the balancing circuit you would otherwise need to keep the midpoint voltage equalised. For a 5 V backup rail or a pulse-load hold-up cap, this is a single-component solution. Capacitance is 1 F with a 0%, +100% tolerance — the wide spread is normal for supercapacitors and reflects the carbon-electrode manufacturing process. The nominal value is what you design around; the actual part can land anywhere from 1 F to 2 F off the line.
ESR and pulse current — the real limit
ESR is 200 mOhm at 1 kHz. This sets the peak current the part can deliver into a load before the internal voltage drop eats into the hold-up time. For a 1 A pulse, the drop is 200 mV — acceptable in most 5 V circuits. The self-heating from ripple current also scales with ESR, so keep the RMS current below the part's thermal limit for the 1000-hour lifetime at 65°C. The 1000-hour lifetime at 65°C is the rated endurance; at 85°C the lifetime halves roughly per 10°C rise, so derate for sustained high-ambient applications.
Through-hole radial can — board-fit details
Package is a radial can with PC Pins, 0.453" (11.50 mm) lead spacing. The through-hole footprint is straightforward for a two-layer board — no thermal pad or special copper pour needed beyond the usual supercapacitor charging-current trace width.
