Capacitance and voltage — the hold-up budget
The SCCR16B205PRB is a 2 F supercapacitor rated at 2.7 V from the KYOCERA AVX SCC series. At 2 F, the stored energy is 7.29 J at the rated voltage — enough to bridge a few hundred milliseconds of supply dropout for a low-power microcontroller or RTC, or to supply a peak current pulse that the main supply cannot source directly.
ESR and the pulse-current ceiling
ESR is specified at 100 mOhm at 1 kHz. For a 2 F capacitor, this ESR sets the charge-discharge time constant at 200 ms and limits the peak current to 27 A into a short circuit at full rated voltage. In practice, the usable pulse current is derated by the allowable voltage drop and the I²R heating within the can.
Temperature and lifetime — the endurance envelope
The 1000-hour figure at 60 °C is the accelerated test condition; at 25 °C ambient the expected life is significantly longer, following the typical 10 °C halving rule for electrolytic capacitors. The -40 °C low end means the capacitor retains charge and can deliver current in cold-start conditions.
Package and board integration
The radial can footprint is standard for supercapacitors in this capacitance range — the 3.50 mm lead pitch fits common 0.1-inch grid prototyping boards and production layouts alike.
