The 8MHz HCMOS oscillator with military temperature grade
The ECS-3961-080-AU-TR is a standard XO crystal oscillator delivering an 8 MHz HCMOS output from a single 5V rail — a common clock frequency for microcontroller cores, UART peripherals, and FPGA reference inputs in industrial and automotive designs. HCMOS output means the drive strength is sufficient for a direct PCB trace to multiple loads without a buffer stage. Most oscillators in this frequency and package class top out at 85°C. The 125°C ceiling means this part can sit in engine-adjacent enclosures, near hot-running ASICs, or in sealed outdoor units without derating the output frequency spec. The ±100ppm frequency stability covers the combined effects of initial tolerance, temperature drift, and aging over the operating life — adequate for UART communication at standard baud-rate error budgets and sufficient for most microcontroller clock trees, though not for precision timing or TCXO-replacement roles.
Package and power-on behavior
The no-lead format requires a reflow profile compatible with lead-free solder — confirm the paste and peak temperature align with the assembly house standard. The enable/disable function on pin 4 stops the output oscillation and drops the supply current to near-zero — useful for power-saving modes where the downstream microcontroller gates its own clock or for test modes where the oscillator is the only noise source to isolate. Maximum supply current is 15 mA, which sets the decoupling capacitor value and the board-level power budget for the rail.
The ECS-3961 series carries an Active product status per the manufacturer — it is in normal production and supported for new designs. Quoted to order against BOM quantities through independent distribution channels. The Tape & Reel and Cut Tape packaging options serve both high-volume automated assembly and low-quantity prototype runs — specify the format that matches your pick-and-place setup.
