USB power switch with 73 mOhm on-resistance and 2.5 A capacity
The Texas Instruments TPS2541RTET is a single-channel, high-side N-channel USB power switch in a 16-WQFN (3x3 mm) package. It delivers up to 2.5 A continuous output from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V load supply, with a typical on-resistance of 73 mOhm. The switch is controlled by a simple On/Off logic interface (non-inverting input) and includes a Status Flag output for fault reporting. Built-in fault protection covers adjustable current limiting, over-temperature shutdown, and undervoltage lockout (UVLO). The part also features load discharge and a status flag, making it suitable for USB host ports, hub controllers, and charging downstream ports in industrial, automotive, and consumer equipment.
At 2.5 A full load, the 73 mOhm typical on-resistance drops about 182 mV across the switch. With a 5.0 V input, the output stays above 4.8 V — well within USB 3.0 and USB Battery Charging 1.2 voltage requirements. If the design runs near the 4.5 V minimum supply, that drop shrinks the margin; plan for a slightly lower continuous current or a higher input rail to maintain the 4.75 V minimum at the connector.
Package and thermal considerations for the 16-WQFN
Without adequate thermal management, the junction temperature can exceed the 125°C maximum at high load currents in a warm enclosure.
