What the TPS2501DRCR does that discrete implementations don't
The Texas Instruments TPS2501DRCR is a USB power switch with an integrated boost converter — a single-chip solution that handles both the upstream voltage conditioning and the downstream port switching. The boost converter allows the part to generate a clean 5 V USB VBUS from a lower input rail, eliminating a separate boost IC and its associated inductor from the BOM. The status flag output provides a logic-level indication of output status for the host controller.
Protection and output configuration
Fault protection includes adjustable current limiting, overtemperature shutdown, and undervoltage lockout — three safeguards that cover the common failure modes in USB power distribution: shorted load, thermal runaway, and brownout conditions. The output can be configured as either high-side or low-side, giving flexibility in how the switch is placed relative to the load. The logic-level input is non-inverting, so the enable signal polarity is straightforward.
The 80 mOhm typical Rds(on) sets the conduction loss floor: at 1.4 A per output, the voltage drop is roughly 112 mV, which stays well within the USB 2.0 voltage drop budget for most designs.
