2.5V to 18V supply — the rail range that sets the fit
The TPS24742RGET: The 2.5V to 18V supply range covers the common backplane rails: 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and intermediate bus voltages. If your board runs a 24V or 48V bus, this part is out of range — look at the TPS2474x family with the higher abs-max. The 4.2 mA supply current is the controller's own draw, not the load current; the internal pass-FET is external, so the load current is set by the FET you pair with it.
Programmable protection — current limit, fault timeout, OVP, UVLO
Four programmable thresholds — current limit, fault timeout, overvoltage protection, and turn-on voltage — let you tune the controller to the load's inrush profile. The latched fault behaviour means the controller shuts off and stays off after a fault, rather than auto-retrying; that is the right choice for a backplane where a sustained short should not cycle power repeatedly. The UVLO pin sets the undervoltage lockout level, so the controller stays off until the input rail is stable.
The -40°C to 125°C operating range covers industrial enclosures, outdoor telecom cabinets, and under-hood automotive auxiliary boxes. The 24-VFQFN footprint is standard 0.5 mm pitch; the centre pad is the thermal and electrical ground connection.
