Load voltage range and output current — what they mean for the rail
The 3V to 19.8V load voltage range covers common system rails: 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and 19V laptop adapters. The 500 mA maximum continuous output current sets the load ceiling — a downstream load drawing 400 mA leaves 20% headroom for inrush and transient peaks. Single output with a 1:1 input-to-output ratio means one enable controls one load; no channel multiplexing or load sharing.
Fault protection — adjustable current limit, over-temperature, reverse current
The TPS22981RGPT integrates three fault protections: current limiting (adjustable via an external resistor), over-temperature shutdown, and reverse-current blocking. The adjustable current limit lets the designer set the trip threshold below the 500 mA max to protect a specific load — a 300 mA limit, for example, catches a fault before the supply rail droops. Reverse-current protection prevents back-feed from the output to the input when the switch is off — useful in multi-rail systems where one rail may hold residual charge.
