4 A load switch with a 4.7 mOhm pass FET
The TPS22970YZPR is a single-channel, high-side load switch from Texas Instruments. It passes up to 4 A continuous through an N-channel MOSFET with a typical on-resistance of 4.7 mOhm — at full current the voltage drop is under 19 mV, so the load sees nearly the full input rail.
Slew-rate control and what it means on the bench
The switch features slew-rate controlled turn-on. Instead of slamming the output on, the gate driver ramps the FET on over a few hundred microseconds. This limits the inrush current into the load capacitance — if the downstream rail has 10 µF of bypass caps, a hard turn-on could pull tens of amps and brown out the upstream regulator. The slew-rate control keeps the start-up clean. The interface is a single On/Off pin with non-inverting logic. Pull the pin high to turn the switch on; low to turn it off. No external level-shifter is needed if the control GPIO runs at the same voltage as the load.
DSBGA-8 — field-rework reality check
The package is an 8-ball DSBGA (0.5 mm pitch, no leads). The solder balls are under the body, so visual inspection of the joints after reflow is impossible without X-ray. If the board goes down in the field and the load switch fails, plan to swap the whole board rather than reball this package on site. For a prototype run, order the Cut Tape; for production, the reel is the standard feed. The base product number is TPS22970 — the YZPR suffix identifies the DSBGA package and the reel packaging.
