Dual high-side power switch with integrated protection
The Texas Instruments TPS2081D is a dual-channel high-side N-channel power switch in an 8-SOIC surface-mount package. Each output is rated for 500 mA continuous with a typical on-resistance of 80 mOhm, making it suited for distributing power to USB peripherals, logic loads, or general-purpose board-level switched rails. The switch is enabled by a logic-level On/Off interface with a non-inverting input; no external Vcc supply is needed because the gate drive is derived from the load voltage itself. Built-in fault protection includes fixed current limiting, over-temperature shutdown, and undervoltage lockout (UVLO). A status flag output reports overcurrent or overtemperature conditions, which can be tied to a host controller interrupt or a diagnostic LED. The switch operates over a load supply range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V and a junction temperature range of 0°C to 125°C, covering most commercial and industrial environments.
What the 80 mOhm Rds(on) and 500 mA rating mean for the BOM
The fixed current limit is not adjustable.
Package and footprint — 8-SOIC
The TPS2081D comes in the standard 8-SOIC package (3.90 mm body width), which is a common footprint for board-level power switches. The surface-mount package suits automated assembly and reflow soldering. The tube shipping medium is typical for prototype and low-volume builds; for production volumes, the part is also available in tape-and-reel (check the reel suffix when ordering).
Lifecycle and sourcing
No last-time-buy or obsolescence notice is in effect, so the part is suitable for new designs and production ramps. It is ROHS3 compliant.
