The 90MHz clock rate on this C28x DSP core is the main event for closed-loop control. It gives you enough headroom to run a sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) loop for a PMSM motor at 20 kHz PWM with current and speed regulation, plus still have MIPS left for comms stack and fault handling. The 32-bit single-core architecture with a hardware multiplier means the math pipeline doesn't stall on a 16-bit x 16-bit multiply-accumulate — that matters when your PI loop needs to converge inside one PWM cycle.
Memory sizing for firmware and data buffers
128KB of Flash (organized as 64K x 16) is the program store. That is enough for a moderate motor-control firmware image with CANopen stack, a few lookup tables, and a bootloader.
Package and thermal — the exposed pad matters
This is a 100-pin TQFP with an exposed pad (HTQFP, 14x14 mm). The thermal pad is not optional — it is the primary heat path for the die. In a motor-drive design where the MCU is driving gate-drive signals at 20 kHz and the ADC is sampling at 1 Msps, the core can dissipate several hundred milliwatts. Without a proper via-stitch pattern under the pad and a solid ground-plane connection, the junction temperature will climb above the 125°C rating in a 85°C ambient. The pad also provides a low-inductance ground return for the high-speed I/O.
