16-bit DSP with integrated Flash and CAN — what this part is
The Texas Instruments TMS320F241PG is a 16-bit fixed-point DSP from the C24x family, built around the C2xx core and clocked at 20 MHz. It carries 16 KB of on-chip Flash program memory (8K x 16) and 1K x 8 of RAM, plus an 8-channel 10-bit ADC.
The 20 MHz clock rate on the C2xx DSP core delivers roughly 20 MIPS of fixed-point throughput. For a typical motor-control loop — current sampling at 10 kHz, PI calculation, PWM update — this leaves headroom for additional comms stack and fault-handling tasks.
16 KB Flash and 1K x 8 RAM — firmware fit
The 16 KB Flash (8K x 16) and 1K x 8 RAM are modest by today's standards. Expect to fit a single motor-control algorithm with CAN messaging and basic fault tables, but not a multi-axis stack or extensive lookup tables. The Flash is field-programmable, so firmware updates are possible in-system, but the RAM is tight — any significant data buffering will require external memory or careful overlay management.
CAN, SCI, SPI, UART — connectivity for industrial networks
The CANbus module allows direct connection to industrial CANopen or DeviceNet networks without an external CAN controller. The SCI (UART) and SPI ports handle legacy serial links to sensors, encoders, or host controllers.
