Eight-channel LVDS driver for high-speed serial backplanes
The Texas Instruments SN75LVDS389DBTRG4 is an eight-channel LVDS driver in a 38-pin TSSOP package, designed to translate parallel CMOS/TTL data into low-voltage differential signals at up to 630 Mbps per channel. The 8/0 driver/receiver count means this is a pure transmit bank — no integrated receiver — so the link partner needs a separate LVDS receiver, such as the SN75LVDS388 or equivalent.
630 Mbps per channel — what it buys on the bus
Each of the eight outputs switches at 630 Mbps, which in a typical 24-bit RGB video link with one clock channel leaves headroom for a 24-bit data word plus control signals at pixel rates above 60 Hz. In a telecom backplane carrying eight serialised T1/ streams, that same 630 Mbps per pair comfortably exceeds the aggregate line rate. The LVDS swing (typically 350 mV differential into a 100 Ω termination) keeps radiated emissions low compared to single-ended CMOS at the same frequency — a real advantage when the board has to pass FCC Class A without a shielded enclosure.
